San Jacinto College's Anderson-Ball Classroom Building, the nation's largest mass timber instructional building at 122,000 SF, was named the Best Project, Higher Education/Research by the Engineering News-Record Texas & Louisiana.
Mass timber—created by laminating wood layers together in either parallel or cross patterns—replaces conventional structural steel throughout the Anderson-Ball structure. Beautiful wood accents can be seen throughout the building, but in the main lobby, 40-foot laminated black spruce columns support double beams, which span the planked ceiling. Additionally, the building boasts electrochromic windows, tubular daylighting, solar photovoltaic generation, gray water recycling, and Internet of Things connectivity.
AG|CM proudly worked alongside Tellepsen Builders and Kirksey Architecture on this award-winning project. AG|CM was contracted to manage the construction of the project alongside our partner, AECOM, as part of the San Jacinto College's 2015 Bond Program, of which AG|CM oversaw 11 major new construction and renovation projects across 3 campuses, totaling $123.2 million.
